Thank you Bev! No one could match your specific perspective and lived knowledge of professor Chomsky. And thanks to all those you mention who have also been pushing back against the very human urge to abandon ship when pirates have lobbed a cannon ball.

Because isn't that what's expected of us by the current administration et al? That we will jump to conclusions, then to be demoralized, heartsick, numbed, even paralyzed by an apparent "mortal blow" to our progressive hero/mentor/moral compass. Meanwhile they continue to redact anything about the president and others.

Meanwhile we DO. NOT. KNOW. How much has AI been a factor?

If Noam eschewed "gossip", and - being elderly and not exactly tech savvy, and not by any stretch a googler of names - then it is very likely indeed that he genuinely did not know of allegations that were only actually developing at the time of his interactions with Epstein.

Thank you Bev. Your article is a much-needed salve for aching humanists.

Bev, you so superbly set the record straight about Noam’s life, legacy and deservedly remarkable reputation. Thank you!

I met Noam in person in 1987 when he gave a talk at Kansas State University, and I managed to get a seat nearby him at a dinner after the event. I earned my dinner seat by writing the bio of Noam for the flyer promoting the event. I had been reading his work in linguistics and human rights for about 12 years from the time I found a copy of his book in the Arizona State University library in 1975. It was his first political book: “American Power and the New Mandarins.”

Noam was so generous with me, as he was with so many others, to correspond by mail and later by email, in the intervening 36 years. We also met in person on a few occasions when he came to the Midwest and to Oregon. Again, because of his generosity. And his generosity made me a better person.

For a single individual, Noam’s life is an astonishing bright light, an unexpected blend of the revolutionary, scientific and innovative thinking of Nicoulas Copernicus and Charles Darwin with the justice-seeking compassion of Martin Luther King and Mohandas Gandhi. Noam’s life illuminates and demonstrates just how one person can live an extraordinary life furthering both science, justice and listening to and responding to so many people who contacted him. His blend of scientific rigor and warm-hearted kindness is what stands out to me.

Aside from the puzzling public condemnations of those who had been Noam’s colleague, friend, or co-author who Bev mentioned above, as Noam lay in a bed in Brazil, unable to speak, several of those who knew Noam, or worked with him, or corresponded with him, made thoughtful public statements in support of Noam, notwithstanding his interactions with Mr. Epstein prior to the federal charges being brought against him on July 6th, 2019.
